Review of Sushi Catapult

Sushi cat's take on the launcher genre

By larryturbo · May 2, 2015

The adorable Sushi cat returns once more this time featured in a game one would never expect it to be in. The appropriately named Sushi Cat-apult is one of the clearest examples of a launcher game, fling the cat and finish the level's objective which can be either travel the distance or collect the floating sushi. It comes equipped with a pretty standard, for such games, upgrade menu and a small set of levels laid out in three subregions. Focusing more on the game play though it is really easy the see that the game doesn't have much to offer.

The game has no real difficulty meaning that you will never find yourself stuck in a level, which sadly decreases it length to nothing more than half an hour. As you play you will find out that most of the upgrades are useless and other than the burrito bison like, bounce upgrade which I consider to be the only one necessary to finish the game, you will most likely not even have a chance to see all of them as you will have finished the game long before running out of upgrades. The levels themselves don't have much to offer either, there are the birds to give you a boost, the spikes on the ground to damage you and the terrible walk that can stop you on the spot and throw you backwards. In conclusion the gameplay is so straightforward and easy that would be perfect for the younger audience but it truly isn't anything that hasn't been done better before.

On the aesthetics department we have a great example of Jimp's familiar work, he really has managed to make the game feel a lot better than it is, and the music is exactly what you'd expect from an Asian themed game something that does not bother me at all.

The game currently has 5 hacks but it is so easy that there is absolutely no reason for you to use them, it would take more time to implement than than actually finishing a level.

Overall I find the game lacking. Some seem to have performance issues, I didn't encounter any though. This game is one of the most basic launchers I've ever played, it is fun but there are dozens more that offer the same experience and possibly more. There surely is a better way to spend that half hour ,but I wouldn’t say I regret playing it.
