Cooler-Thing

10/11/2013

The 2nd part of Thing-Thing. This one is kind of strange, it appears to be still experimental but also an improvement of the first one. The game is very simple, it's a platformer where you move and shoot with your mouse. "Kind of like Metal Slug" some will say, though that's more like a foolish assumption.

The gameplay in Thing-Thing 2 is very different from Thing-Thing one, although the premise is almost the same. Now, there are levels which you must complete and then you can replay them back if you want to. Enemies act like zombies, they got absolutely no weapons and all they do is just get near you and try to punch you, not sure why, maybe they really are zombies. For this case, weapons can't be obtained unlike in the first Thing-Thing, you have to unlock them by doing a bunch of stuff such as making a high kill count and the like. If you wonder how you get ammo, simple, kill enemies and they drop ammo. Don't ask me the logic about it.

Each weapon is actually more like an improvement over a diversity. For example, the first pistol sucks, the 2nd pistol is better and the 3rd is the best. Each weapon is set by a category, which ranges from Pistol, Sub-Machinegun, Shotgun and Magnum. What does this mean? It means that any pistol will use that type of ammo, same with any SMG and so on. There's a special rare weapon called "Derringer", it only has two rounds but deals extreme damage that all the times it's a one-hit shot kill. You can only obtain it from your enemies and it's not even permanent, you shoot the last round and you lose it, so use this veeeery carefully.

The HP system is now a red bar that slowly regenerates whenever you get hit. There are no healthpacks. Besides, you also get a "sprint bar", which lowers every time you jump or run and it's actually a very bitchy feature since it can get so low so fast. Getting damaged is actually harder than it looks, since the enemies are slow and just punch you, you can easily jump around and shoot them 'til they die and so on. Most the times, the only way you'll really die is from the Boss or from not moving at all and just get mass punched.

More about the enemies, they're not different despite going around with distinct suits, hats, helmets, etc...Except in one case when you're in an "Egyptian" level, only mummies appear there and they're twice as strong, so yeah...

The story is complex and acts like there isn't any at all, but there is. If you ever played Thing-Thing, then you'll know that you were able to escape, and after you did so, you just keep moving forward to a forever-night city with some industrial complex in the far end. Being hunted by what appears to be "zombies", you just keep killing them all non-stop.

The graphics are way better than in Thing-Thing 1, although you might notice it being somewhat similar. The guns got waaay better detail, characters got better-detailed hats/faces and outfits and the animations are way better. So as you can see, this was indeed heavily improved. Also, the background IS a background now and you don't get that "scene to scene" level transition thingy anymore, it follows the character. The only thing I'd consider ridiculous is the gore, it's just stupid, enemies explode full of blood when you headshot them. But, let's talk more about the setting...So yeah, it's an always-night City which then turns from a big-ass sun Egyptian Pyramid desert to an Industrial Complex, the fuck? How does that even make sense? I guess the setting is in Egypt, where you get from an Egyptian grimmy city to the good ol' Egyptian Pyramids and finally an Egyptian Industrial Complex. Really, I just don't understand this setting at all.

Sound is better in here than in Thing-Thing 1, but not by a lot. The guns sound better but the punch sound is stupider than that unrealistic "POW!" interpretation, besides, when you die, you'll hear one of the dumbest dying vocals ever.

Music is now even more diverse in here...Well, that's because there's more than just ONE. Each level (except some) has its own unique music, most of it is some nice relaxing electronic of some sort, some are Electro-Industrial, some Industrial and so on. The music quality is not good sadly, but the music in itself is very nice.

So, what more do I have to say about this game? Nothing much, but I can easily say that this is one of the best games I have ever played myself and I still tend to replay it. I highly recommend it!
