Just a name

The first Necronator was great, but is the second one great as well? Well...I'll make a complete review of telling you why I don't like it as much;

Gameplay; The gameplay has been changed, no longer it's a "Make a mass of undead and RAVAGE the whole place!", it's now a "Tactically and economically make some units, then go around getting buildings, killing enemies and destroying their bases". You could say it's now kinda like Warcraft, though I wouldn't say it is. It's not bad, but it really breaks the good thing that the first game had. Why such a radical change? And I do mean radical; You don't JUST play as the Undead (Even if you do, it doesn't feel like the first Necronator), you also play as the Humans or even Orcs, Elves or even Dragons. There's also another faction called Majapahit but for now (OR NEVER) it's not available. They all have some basics and some differences. For example, I think the Undead have the cheapest and most regular army, the Skeleton Minions sure are great and the Zombies can turn other enemies into zombies as well, while the Dragonians are the lowest but strongest. Humans seem to be the most adaptable or/and basic. Elves are almost like humans, but I never noticed if they're good archers like the stereotypical elves. Orcs are the most expensive and the second strongest, maybe they actually are the second most expensive and the first most expensive are the Dragons, I actually forgot. Each of these factions have their own "stories", but the stories are boring and just there for those that really care.

There's an upgrade system based on "Shields". To get them, you must do "Challenges". For example, beat a level in 1 minute and 30 seconds. A lot of the challenges require you to play it on a harder difficulty. You can get only 4 Shields on each level. With these Shields, you can get a new unit and upgrade it or get spells or general upgrades (Such as more Food, more experience points gained, more initial gold and gold gained, all units deal more damage, have more armour, etc). Most of them are worth it, but sadly there are some awesome upgrades in which you can only get with Premium Content. Now that's actually bullshit, can't we get them by doing a stronger challenge instead of paying for it?! Why must be pay for awesome stuff instead of do our biggest effort to get it through sheer will and so on? Challenges are fun. Paying, is not fun at all.

I can't say much about spells because I don't use them much, but I can say that I think you really should try using and upgrading some, they ARE useful and they WILL be vital in the next levels.

Also, the difficulty is extremely unbalanced. Playing as a Human, you will find out that the game is very easy even if you play on Hard. But playing as an Undead, you'll get frustrated at how annoyingly hard the enemies get, even on Easy. Maybe I just suck at this game, but this is what I noticed and that's all I can say. Horrible balance.

Now, let's us go into...

Bugs; Rarely I make a "list of bugs", but this one deserves it. The unit control here...I'll quote Scow2 on the top comments, "is WAY too frustrating". He's right. It's not just because sometimes the units go where you don't want them to go (most the times they go where you want them to go, but can't go there because they're not travelling through the right terrain, they're trying to pass through some grass that is not passable in this game). I'm very sure this is a bug, not a gameplay style or something.

There's also actually a difference between the Kongregate version and the Armor Games version. In Armor Games, if you use the Spike spell while at full speed, you'll notice that the Spike is not speeded up, while in Kongregate it is. What the fuck? Couldn't they fix the bugs in BOTH versions?!

The "bug differences" on both versions is what really makes the bugs here very damn frustrating. They both have benefits, for example, Kongregate is less buggy, at least that's how I think it is, while in Armor Games, even if you get Online Save and what seems to be a slightly cheaper Premium Content payment, you'll get more bugs than in Kongregate. I don't want to believe that the developers are doing this especially just so they can make you waste money on both versions...But I think it is...Well, all we really know is that Toge really are a bunch of unresponsive assholes. They should have fixed the bugs in Necronator 2, on both versions (and others if there ARE others) instead of already making another zombie game. Also, they should have been working on adding content, we don't have the Majapahit yet!

And I think there's a bug with the Shields; You can reset, but you won't get all your shields back. Though I can't confirm this one.

Guh, it seems that I mention more complaints than bugs...But it's all I can say, there are two major bugs that Toge don't even care to fix it or at least make a workaround. It sucks when a developer starts to not give a shit about a game and just makes another one, leaving this one full of bugs. They could at least an open source I guess.

Graphics; The graphics have also been radical changed from Necronator. Necronator had some pixel-like graphics, I think it was an attempt to make it look like 16-bit or so, you know? Arcade console style, or maybe not. In here, it's more cartoonish than anything else, as well as very stereotypical. The Humans look like Roman Legionaires with a twist; There are WOMEN! But, there are actually no women, it's just a poster girl. Besides, the poster boy is full of muscles and abs, his helmet can't even be worn. And why are the orcs so fat and grotesque and there's even a female? Ingame, they look like badasses...Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that the humans don't look like legionnaires in game at all, they look more like some sort of Medieval knights and voluntary (or not) peasants. The elves...Well, they look like the stereotypical sexy elves and in game they look almost the same...Except no females, sorry perverts. The dragons look cynical and green, but in the posters, they look like some teeth-clenching, ready to eat you badasses (except for the female dragon...I know I know, I mention females way too many times). Yeah, see, posters are liars. Like I said, the graphics are very cartoony and stereotypical, but in game it's just cartoony. And of course there's not much detail, at least on humans, you can see that they don't have any faces at all.

And in comparison to Necronator again, it seems that the camera is no longer a "Top-down".

Sound; Just like Necronator, this game hardly gives us any variety. The music is nearly always the same. Unlike Necronator 1, it doesn't use some mono game-styled audio. Besides, there's no Calm and Fight music, just the same music. I suppose I can say that at least Necronator offers SOME music. The sound is different, but I find it boring simply because we don't get to hear the pleasureable Skeleton's scimitar SLASH. Also, we have some returning sounds, mostly when somebody dies.

In summary, the game is VERY different from the first Necronator and that actually kind of sucks. If this was named something else, it would be better rated by everyone I bet, because I KNOW just by giving a game another name, they will think it's another game and rate it differently. But oh well...The gameplay would have been great, if it wasn't for the annoying bugs and frustrating controls. I really wish the devs could finish the game already, fix ALL the bugs they can see (I know not all bugs can ever be fixed, but come on now, at least 90% or more of them is possible!) and do something about the horrible controls. As for the storyline, well I can't say much about it, I'm not really a person who's up for storylines.

If you like strategy, you can try it out. I'd recommend you play it on Kongregate because it's less buggy, even though Armor Games has an Online Save and cheaper Premium Upgrades...Maybe if we all kept PMing the devs to fix this game and add content, we could make "our dreams" come true!

Also, some more suggestions; Play as the humans, they're the least frustrating. Sadly the undead have some very annoyingly difficult (and not challenging) levels. I never tried the Dragons or the Elves though, the Orcs are also hard, but I think they're less frustrating than the undead.
