Props, and Those Who Hunt Them

12/14/2014

Hunters and Props has relatively unique gameplay, combining classic FPS with the Hidden Object genre comparable to the Garry's Mod Prop Hunt. Either create a server using your own set of options or join one already in progress then proceed to choose a team. Every round the teams are reversed (not shuffled). The Hunters team finds everyone on the opposing team, the Props, after they hide and tries to shoot 'em dead. However, this can be difficult as the Props can change appearance to match any objects nearby and can even move from room to room. In addition, Props have taunts that slowly heal them at the cost of revealing their location; Hunters simply follow the sound of the taunt. Hunters have health as well and every shot that is a wide miss will result in loss of health as a balancing measure to prevent Hunters from spraying a room full of bullets. Hits and near misses do not reduce Hunters' health.
Graphically, the game is reasonably nice as it has been built using Unity (Unity 4 Beta). All objects scattered throughout the map are movable as well. However, in third-person view one has simply to swivel the camera through walls to see areas or rooms that should not be seen normally from one's position, making it much easier for Props to outmanœuvre Hunters.
Music is absent entirely, but this does make it easier to hear all other sounds like those of gunshots and Props' taunts. The sounds that are present are unimaginative and repetitive, detracting from the overall experience, but necessary sometimes for Hunters to find Props, or Props to avoid Hunters. There are only three taunts as well (of varying length) and these to can become tiresome when overused.
Hacks for this game are all but nonexistent, but due to the overall simplicity of the game not much could be gained apart from immortality. Occasionally, rounds will not end or other glitches will occur, perhaps because the game was built using a beta version of Unity. Some of these glitches can be exploited to hide in walls or other typically inaccessible areas. Rarely, the names of the players on the opposing team will be visible to you making hiding or hunting Props very easy.
The draw of the game is in it's almost childish Hide & Seek styled play, providing a fun reason to come back to the game. As there are only two weapons, the SMG and the shotgun, this allows Hunters to focus on the hunting aspect as opposed to more tactical or stealthy aspects that other games employ. It's up to the Props to be more stealthy. However, as there is only one map, a hotel themed level, the player is eventually left wanting. While the game is ingenuitive in its idea, no aspect of the game remains fresh for more than a short while. It is definitely a game that is worth playing, but it's not going to keep one hooked for very long.
