Aesthethics and Storyline

The earl octopusor is one of many, point and click puzzle games. After playing countless other point and click puzzle games, what makes this game really different is its art style. It kind of reminds of Van Gogh's art style, somewhat abstract but understandable. This can work against you as it is extremely detailed and homogeneous, therefore it may be difficult to find key objects to continue.

The storyline is minimalistic and simple, where an octopus attacks and two star crossed lovers get separated from each other, asking for the main character, Libellule's help to save them, in return for a big reward. The setting is at sea where the Captain falls in ove with a mermaid. Although without dialogue, it definitely adds appeal to the game and would probably be why anyone would replay a point and click puzzle game.

The audio is fairly simple as well, but I feel it fits to the entire theme and it makes sense.

Game Mechanics

Other than the difficulty finding objects and key places, the game is pretty much straightforward. The puzzles are easy to solve and very obvious. This game involves finding objects and putting them together or in certain positions, as well as remembering colour patterns and a 3 digit safe. The puzzles may be easy, but finding them is another thing in addition to a pretty huge area to explore, which is probably why Greg had a hard time deciding if it would be a medium or hard badge awarded for completing it.

There are 2 difficulty settings, which i found odd for a point and click puzzle game, but later came to realise the normal mode was, of course normal. However, on the easy mode, your cursor would turn red from blue if you hovered over an important object or position and things which you have to remember would also glow red.

Conclusion

All in all, I think it's an average point and click game with a unique storyline and art style. I would definitely recommend this for people who like puzzle games with a bit of solving mystery or storyline, or for people who like quick games. The game is not very replayable for obvious reasons, once you have solved the puzzle and known the storyline, there's nothing new. Seems like there is a sequel though, as it states "to be continued" after the game has ended.
