Rebuild is the fist in a series of city managment games in a zombie apocalypse setting, by northway games.
You find yourself in control of a few blocks of a city which has been overrun by zombie hordes, your first task is to survive and then later your task is to save humanity one way or another.
The first game has excellent sound and the graphics are pretty good. The audio sets the mood really well, but the graphics are a little bit too coulourful and lively for the setting, in my opinion.
I gave it an eight out of ten because when it was released it really stood out from the crowd, and whilst it may have aged this is mostly because of the higher quality games that Sahrah Northway the creator of the rebuild series continues to produce.
The gameplay is turn based management and building, the controls all make sense and nothing really seems to be counter intuitive, the writing is pretty good and sets the mood well.
For me the gameplay is excellent as I prefer mouse only controls and turn based games.
Some of the stats don't seem to add up such as the ammount of food that can be obtained from a supermarket or the ammount of people who can live in a surburban house, but the game is good enough to forgive that, and ignore reality temporarily.
I gave this game a nine out of ten for gameplay simply because I really enjoyed playing it right from the beginning and still do.
I have replayed it time and time again, there are several possible endings and difficulty settings and each map that you play in is random.
Despite this the replayability is lost as you move on to the sequels as they offer everything that the original game has to offer but also many improvements and changes.
I gave it a seven out of ten for replayability. If I was writing this review before the sequels were released I would be giving it a nine out of ten but the sequels are more replayable than the original as they mostly improve on it.
The hacks that are available for this game are helpful but the game itself is quite easy once you have got used to it so they are a bit superfluous. I suppose you can get some more playibilty out of the game if you want to play around with it in cheat editor.
I gave this game a five out of ten for hackworthiness / hackability because even though I have been playing this game since it was first released none of the hacks that I have seen posted for it to have tempted me to try them out on it. The hacks that are currently available are ok for new players but won't really make much difference to me.
Overall I really like this game and it has been one of my favourites for quite a few years; it has spawned a few sequels which are mostly a possitive improvement on the original and even a rip off.
The game is also immersive, which is a rare and wonderful thing and must be cherished.
I think that this game is well worth playing if you like this genre, and worth trying out even if you don't.
I gave it a nine out of ten overall because despite the fact that it falls short of the mark in some areas it is awesome and filled with fabulousness and zombies.
