Protector yet again, but turned the best

10/02/2017

Yep, Protector yet again. We got the first one, and we got the second one (called "Protector: Reclaiming the Throne").

If you read my other reviews, I pretty much diss the first and like the second, I take this third one as the second one.

First of all, let me tell you about the new additions;
HEROES
The game now allows you to hire up some heroes, these guys are virtually exactly the same as the two classes you get to choose (Mage & Warrior).
The difference is that they already start largely experienced, so they can give you a good edge.
They also have special kind of speciality, such as the Archer, Tandar, he's greater when you put him near trees as it increases his damage by 5% (up to 40%, but that's only if you put him right on 8 adjecent trees).
But they cost way too much, it will take quite a long while just to get at least one. (And if it's not obvious enough, heroes with more 'perks' cost a lot more)
And to make it worse, they have a 'wage cost'! Which is exactly like an up-keep, eachtime you play a map and wether you lose, win or even 'restart' it will remove some coins from you.
It's actually a very crappy feature, especially when you're one who likes to restart for different strategies to perfect a level or so.
EXPERIENCE
The point system in the old game, where you get one point each level won, has been replaced with an experience system, which I dare say is better.
You can repeat any map you want just to farm up on XP, not just to try new moves or beat your old highscore.
And even if I do think it is better...It's still rather grindy. Took me more than 5 levels just to get one point, this probably figures why there's so little of these upgrade options.
SIMPLIFIED SKILLS
The skill system, which was incredibly boring and trite in the first game, as well as a bit complex and still boring enough in the second game, has been simplified yet again.
This time, the skills are still exactly the same; way boring than ever. But now, you don't have to switch around one another and there's no 'specialized' skills, that is, if you want your warriors to be strong, you simply upgrade one skill, not one specified for him.
AWARDS
Something similar to Cursed Treasure 2's ingame achievements, but better. If you take a challenge/achievement, you will be awarded for it, which gives a small but significant boost for you. The best example is "Flawless Victory", which you get by simply finishing a level with no lives lost (very easily done on the very first level). That award will give you one extra life. Sure, it may be just one, but who knows when you'll really need it? It's a good backup!
Although sadly some awards are grind-worthy, such as the one where you should play the game for more than 10 hours. Yeah, I'd rather keep my internet open for that.
Or better yet, cheat it.
MONEY SYSTEM
Yep, there is now some kind of money system for Protector. This is used only to get Heroes though, so it's not that much of an interesting new feature, sadly enough.

But other than that, the gameplay is exactly the same as in "Protector: Reclaiming the Throne".
You get two classes, you make them obtain experience just so you can make them specialize in a type of elemental, be it physical (Warrior only), fire, poison, ice or energy.
Unlike in the first game, these elementals don't give out their own unique specialization, you choose them instead. That's actually exactly the same as in "Protector: Reclaiming the Throne", which makes it less unique for that matter.

The sound? Absolutely nothing has changed, it's all nearly the same. The music is still from ADG3, which, yeah sure, it IS very good but it gets repetitive FAST.
The attack and magic sounds, still the same. The death sounds of creatures, still the same for all of them.
Simply, don't expect anything new related to sounds in this one.

If you really wonder about the graphics, well they're just like in "Protector: Reclaiming the Throne", although I did notice some changes, the animations seem to be a lot smoother than before and the edges on the models seem smoother as well. But I think that's just a placebo effect on me, nothing is new for it.

Overall, this is a game I only recommend for those who love Tower Defense, since it won't really be good for those that casually play it 'cos it gets boring rather quick, just like all the Protector games anyway.
I also recommend this for anybody who's a fan of Protector, this here is the BEST Protector you will ever get, beats even Protector IV.
