Tower Defense 'Revolutionary'?

07/29/2014

Protector is a Tower Defense game that proudly calls itself as a revolutionary of all Tower Defense games. But is it? I'm not too sure, but I will tell you its values.

In terms of Gameplay, it is what it is, a Tower Defense game. What you got are 4 type of mages, they specialize in Fire, Ice, Poison and Electricity. They're actually called Red, Blue, Green and Purple mages ingame and yes, they got their respective colours so might as well be good naming. "Why is that? Fancy stuff?" No comrade, it's because you got to know which enemy is weak to what and strong to what. For example, a rat that is strong against Poison is worse for a Poison mage, but if it's weak to Fire, then it is (obviously) better for a Fire mage. You also got this guy called "Dexer" (probably a misspell of dexter, right hand), he's the Swordsman. What's special about him? Well, he's got less range and can only hit ground units but his damage is great, so he's better against everything (especially bosses, I guess) but not as versatile.

Funny thing is, ALL enemies remove 1 life if they reach the point. Yes, ALL enemies, even bosses. Regular enemies, when they reach the point, will disappear, but bosses will keep appearing until they die, so they pretty much respawn at the start.

Another thing about enemies, you can select them while playing to remind yourself what they are weak against and if they had any special immunities, as well as know how much HP they got left, but not their names, the hell? Oh well. Also, some of them got special immunities, which I mentioned before, such as being immune to getting poisoned, to being electrocuted, being slowed down, etc...Making them harder to take advantage of. Some are even more unique since they can Regenerate. Better kill these ones fast. Best strategy for those that regenerate? Don't make the "towers" be very close to each other, separate them. Oh and you thought regenerate was bad? It gets worse with Absorb, that is, all the damage it does is inverse; it heals them. An enemy can absorb Lightning? Let's hope they won't reach the Purple mages then.

The game also has a "Skills" tree. In here, every time you win a level you'll get one skill point in which you can assign and even re-assign. I suppose this is good for replay value. Although they're way too unoriginal, that is, the very first trees are all about economy, that is, lowering the needed gp to buy by 5. Except the Cubical ones, those will unlock special units such as Necromancers, Paladins, Archers, Alchemists, etc...The bottom Cubical ones unlock better in general stuff, such as less money spend on removing pavements, less time needed to get XP, . This skill tree is better used tactical, which I think that's obvious. That is, if you know that in this level there's gonna be a lot of Fire-resistant enemies, then why spend skill points on Fire mages? Unless you know some will be weak to Fire, then spend SOME on it.

Other than that, these elements are not as obvious as you think they are for, yes some of them are; Fire is for living/undead beings, such as rats, zombies and even skeletons. Poison is for humans. Ice is for Orcs. Lightning is for ghosts. But is it always? Nope. Some rats are vulnerable to ice, some ghosts are vulnerable to "Normal" (I like to consider that as Silver), some are some of that and this...

Units also got an upgrade. Every time they deal damage, they get some XP. When it reaches the required amount, you can level it up but you'll have to spend some gold. Each level up means more gold. Most of these level ups are between Specialist and Generalist. Specialist gets their specialty, which I will tell later. Generalist goes for pure raw power. The max amount of XP level they can get to is 9, "Legendary". To get more GP, you must kill more enemies. Each enemy got its own unique amount of GP earned. Same with XP.

Unit Specialty is the unique ability that a unit has. That is, the Fire Mage got "Splash", which makes it so all the damage he deals is a splash instead of just for that target. The Ice Mage has "Slow", which depending on the percentage will make an enemy move slower than usual. The Green Mage got "Poison", which will deal damage over time (great for bosses and HP hogs obviously). The Purple Mage got "Electric", which makes an enemy more vulnerable to all damage types. The Dexer got Critical, which gives a chance of double damage.

Things get slightly more interesting when you get to use the four special units. That is, the Alchemist, this one only attacks ground and instead of magic he uses some sort of bombs. His special ability is splash. It is best againt, obviously, grouped enemies. He's pretty much a stronger and independent (that is, doesn't depend on fire) Red Mage.
The Necromancer, this one sadly is not what you think he is, an evil dude that raises skeletons, zombies and the like. He is a very strong mage though, his damage is high and has a chance for Necrosis, which is a very debilating specialty and if I remember right, it can't be resisted! Cool, huh?
The Archer, now this fellow that I'm sure everybody would hate in real life (hell, probably hates them like hell in medieval videogames and such) is nothing special, he's got a puny damage of 8...But his specialty is anti-air, and at the start it's 25 so any air unit should fear this guy. Not just that, his range is 3 blocks! Worth it, especially for air units, but is good even as a regular troop.
And finally, the Chiv Dexer (Which I prefer to call as Paladin), this guy goes in gold armour, or at least it seems gold armour, and I don't even know why but whatever, right? Anyway, the Paladin is pretty much a stronger Dexer that has more critical hit and his "Normal" damage is even more advanced, that is, you can consider it as a "Piercer" since it doesn't care much about any elemental weakness or resistance. Chiv Dexer is my top favourite unit, but sadly it has a range of 1 and it's melee only.

Also, this game gives you a very painful kick in the balls, and that is...NO WAY TO SELL "TOWERS". The developer says it himself anyway, this game was made to not have any "Sell Tower" feature in order to make the players really care about where to put the towers. Or something like that. I don't really care, I don't like this "feature" myself at all. For me, it has no reason to have it.

The worst flaw about this game? IT HAS NO FAST FORWARD! Yep, you got to spend (Waste, because that's what the score says in the end) all your time watching this game. Luckily, Cheat Engine might help! But it still doesn't serve any justice that the game has no fast forward. Besides, it has no hotkeys either.

As for Graphics, I can say that it is very basic and not much variety in it. For example, all the ratmen are identical with their breastplate, all the Dexers got the same gray chainmail and hood, all the red mages are red...What the moustachio? It actually makes sense that all red mages are red. No shit, huh? Hah! The environment is pretty much like a cut tile off the earth, it is hideous. Everything is static, not even the water moves. Everything is extremely gritty as well, as if it was meant to be realistic but is not. As I said, it's hideous. It might even be considered deranged like "The Misadventures of Flapjack". Besides, like I said before, not only are they graphically the same but in animations. All ratmen walk the same. Gets kinda boring and then into an eyesore.

Let's go to Sound and Music, shall we? Well, the sound sounds very old, it's not too bad but not too original or great. You do get to hear a variety of dying sounds (especially from necromancers) as well as a variety of magic sounds. The music though...It's so relaxing. It's not really my type of music, I prefer Industrial over anything else, but this one is ambient music and it sounds sooo good. It's like Aphex Twin with 0 creepiness (if it was even creepy anyway), just pure relaxation. All of it made by a person nicknamed as ADG3. He (she?) did a very good job at it. Sadly, even if the music IS nice, it is easy to consider it as repetitive. Even Eric Brosius' music's repetitiveness wasn't that repetitive.

Overall, if you can forgive about the over-simplicity and the eyesore-ish graphics, you might be able to enjoy this game. Even more so if you're into Tower Defense.
