Resurrection

It turns out dead is a relative term.

Resurrection

KongHack comes from an older internet.

An internet of forums, browser games, view-source, questionable PHP, deeply unnecessary projects, and people building strange things because they thought they would be cool.

No product strategy.

No engagement funnel.

No venture capital.

Just servers making concerning noises in the dark.

Somewhere along the way, KongHack became much larger than anyone expected. At its peak, the site served more than ten million hits a month. More than 250,000 people created accounts. It accumulated games, artwork, source code, documentation, friendships, arguments, and enough technical debt to qualify as a sovereign nation.

And then, eventually, it died.

Mostly.

KongHack never actually went offline. The servers kept running. The site remained standing. But development stopped, the community quieted, and much of what KongHack had been slowly slipped into dormancy.

Its history remained scattered across the live site, repositories, databases, backups, forgotten archives, and the memories of the people who were there.

Some machinery was still running.

Some was merely dormant.

Some required archaeology.

Some was discovered making noises despite having no obvious power source.

But underneath the dust, KongHack was still there.

So the crypt was opened.

THIS IS NOT A RESTORATION.

KongHack has not returned as a museum piece.

The goal was never to prop up the corpse, arrange some screenshots around it, and invite everyone to admire how alive it used to be.

The old machinery has been dragged into the light and rebuilt for the modern web: current PHP, Composer, Twig, Bootstrap 5, containers, automated deployment, and infrastructure created sometime after humanity discovered dependency management.

The work goes much deeper than the surface. Old systems have been repaired, replaced, rewritten, or interrogated until they revealed what they were supposed to do. Content has been recovered. Accounts and documentation have been brought forward. Pieces of the original machinery have been taught tricks their creators could not reasonably have anticipated.

Some of the code involved is old enough to vote.

Some of it should not be allowed near a polling station.

There are bugs.

There will be more bugs.

This is what happens when a developer emerges from a crypt carrying a production server and nobody manages to stop them.

But the server is running.

And the games are playable.

Right now.

KHWar

KHWar is back.

Its persistent world of territories, landmarks, competition, and rebirth is alive again, rebuilt and dramatically expanded from what existed before.

At this point, KHWar is essentially complete, which, in KongHack terminology, means it will remain complete until somebody has another terrible idea.

Then all bets are off.

ADR

ADR is also back, although “back” does not entirely cover what has happened to it.

What survived of the original game became the foundation for something much larger: towns, exploration, combat, character classes, items, skills, housing, arenas, crafting infrastructure, and an expanding collection of interconnected systems shambling together with increasingly alarming coordination.

ADR is currently in beta and actively growing.

It is part resurrection, part continuation, and part laboratory accident.

So far, the laboratory accident is going extremely well.

Settlement

Then there is Settlement.

Settlement is the newest creature loose inside KongHack. It is publicly playable and currently in alpha, which means the doors are unlocked, the foundations are still moving, and reality may occasionally behave in undocumented ways.

That is not a warning.

It is an invitation to poke things.

SOMETHING ELSE IS SLEEPING

And somewhere deeper in the archives, Age of Dragons is waiting.

Nothing has been done with it yet.

Probably best not to disturb it.

Yet.

THE ARCHIVES ARE OPENING

A project this old leaves behind a remarkable amount of debris.

Source code. Artwork. Screenshots. Databases. Old domains. Documentation. Abandoned experiments. Half-finished ideas. Entire systems whose purpose must now be reconstructed from three files, a broken image, and a comment reading:

 // fix this later

Where possible, that history is being recovered and preserved.

Not because everything old should be restored unchanged. Some things belong to the internet that created them. Some deserve to be rebuilt. Some should be sealed in concrete and dropped into the sea.

The trick is determining which is which.

KongHack’s history matters—but this is not an exercise in pretending it is 2010 again.

Nostalgia can open the crypt.

It cannot keep the machinery running.

New work can.

ALIVE IS A DIRECTION

There is no polished corporate roadmap.

There are games being played, systems being built, archives being excavated, and a suspiciously long list of ideas waiting for somebody to make the tactical error of saying, “How hard could that be?”

Some things will be restored.

Some will be rebuilt.

Some entirely new and deeply inadvisable things will appear.

That is how KongHack started.

That is how it intends to continue.

The lights are back on.

KHWar is standing.

ADR is growing.

Settlement is loose.

Age of Dragons is sleeping badly.

And after a very long absence:

Welcome back to KongHack.

Everything's coming up KongHack!
