To make a long story short, some weird ass shit is going on with Charter.  My internet died last night around midnight, and I haven't been able to get back in since.  They've even came out and replaced the fucking modem, still no luck.

Long story short, it looks like we're going to be down till Saturday evening.  They are coming back out again to figure this shit out.  I've spent all fucking day trying to figure it out and haven't been able to do shit. :(

UPDATE:
Fucking tech today was a moron.  They will be back Tuesday between 5-7 with new hardware and a new router.  This is getting fucking stupid...

UPDATE:
w00t, we're back online!

sounds like its either your software (i doubt it) or their servers are having some kinda problem.

or possibly the cables fucked up somewhere in between

I figured it out.  Unfortunately, after talking to another tech, all they can do via phone is instruct you how to turn it off and on again.

It looks like there was a firmware update in the line of modems.  It's only assigning an IPV6 address.  Unfortunately, none of my routers are fucking expecting an IPV6 address.  I just got Smoothwall installed on a server, and it can occasionally pass a few ipv4 bits through, but then it shits out.

On the other hand, if I plug my Windows 7 box in, I get internet!  Win 7 has no problems with IPV6.  Amazing how 3 linux distros and 2 routers can't fucking handle it.

Example 1)
Modem ----- router ------ my pc.
I can see the router, I can access the router.
The router cannot see nor connect to the modem.
I can login to the router and tell it to ping google.  It fails.

Example 2)
Modem ----- Smoothwall ----- my pc.
I can see smoothwall, I can acces smoothwall.
Smoothwall can see my pc, smoothwall can access my pic.
I can login to either from either.  Smoothwall is effectively a desktop with 2 NICs.
Smoothwall can establish a connection to the modem, but no data will pass though.  It can't even ping google...

Example 3)
Modem ----- my pc.
Everything works fucking gloriously.

Worst case scenario here, I replace smoothwall with a stripped down version of windows 7.  I use the windows passthrough stuff, and plug the second port back into my router's WAN.  Should solve the problem. :)

lol, TNC, you're troubleshooting skills are exceptional!

Strange, I come home from work this morning and it seems my modem/router has been...reset? I logged in and it had me set a new username/password, the wireless had been set back to the default WEP (yes, WEP, Verizon FTW!), and all of my access rules are gone. Fortunately for me, I'm up and running again. Wish I could say the same for you TiM.

According to this apparently false statement, Charter says, "We've been preparing for this change for several years. Most customers will not need to take any action for IPv6, because Charter has planned to add IPv6 seamlessly to its network."

Is there any type of firmware update for the routers to make them IPv6 compatible or maybe an option in the modem to set it back to IPv4 (doubtful) internally? I'm not sure why they wouldn't make that backward compatible, at least for now. I don't think the world's ready for mainstream IPv6, but I suppose they've been fucking around with it long enough. Time to start forcing people to use it.

Their main reason for IPV6 is that it kills NAT routing.

Instead of your router getting an IP from the modem, then assigning IPs to all connected devices, the modem would assign an IPv6 address to every device.  This way, they can see how many devices you have connected.

So far, I haven't found shit to handle it.  :(

IPv6 reminds me of my homeland's attempted evolution of something(central capitalism)-to-communism, as well as that spanish agrarian reform.

They both never reached at all and then quickly forgotten.

It deeply sucks, they both were great ideas, so is IPv6.

Though, me being technologically dumb, IPv6 IS great, right?

With IPv4 there are 4,294,967,296 unique addresses and with IPv6 it's around 3.4×1038 (340 trillion trillion trillion) unique addresses. More than enough to give everyone on this planet and every internet capable device they own a unique, globally routable IP addresses. Which means eventually, no more NAT! DHCP will dissappear as well. Not to mention IPv6 has built in IPsec, multicast, and jumbograms (which allows the exchange of packets with payloads of up to one byte less than 4 GiB). There are a bunch more but I'm trying to avoid a full blown Net+ discussion. It's going to be a rough transition, especially in enterprise environments. Not to mention issues with legacy devices. It won't be easy and can be costly, which I think plays a big part in the resistance. For your average user, they probably won't even notice unless they have some type of hardware (like TiM's router for example) that isn't IPv6 compatible. But then again, the ISPs will probably start handing out modem/router combos like Verizon does.

2 problems.

1) With NAT routing, I can keep all of my stuff tucked away safely behind a router, directing various ports to their various destinations.  I have 1 IP for all devices instead of a different IP per device.

2) With NAT routing, my ISP only sees 1 device on my connection.  With direct IPv6, the ISP will see all of my devices.  If you think they won't jack up the price for people with multiple devices, you're nuts.

I believe you'll still be able to NAT with IPv6. So you should still be able to mask your internal network.

The ISP should allocate a /something to each customer that should give them more IPs than they could ever use. Verizon's website says they'll issue a /54 to their static IP (business) customers, not sure how they'll issue the rest using dynamic IPs. I'm not sure about charging more for multiple devices because your typical home is already running numerous (PCs, laptops, iDevices, cell phones, etc), but I can guarentee that if they see that you're running any type of public service you'll be charged the "business rate". Although, those greedy sonsabitches will rape you any given opportunity, so I won't argue with you there. :)

I also have a temporary chat set up. I'll put out the info as soon as I can confirm that it is acually up and running for anyone other than myself...

Edit: You're going to need something like Psi or Pidgin to get on the chat, it's not tied into the site, but I have a temporary chat set up. Thanks to kadat for helping me test.

Instructions for Psi (they're probably similar in Pidgin):

- Add a new account in Psi
- Make sure the Register new account is checked
- Name of the server: tempchat.konghack.com
- Manually specify server host/port: tempchat.dyndns.org / 5222

Click next and register username/password.
